Very recently, we reviewed Triple Dragons by Pragmatic Play and gave it quite a few negative remarks. The theme was non-existent, it felt like it was blatantly pandering to the Chinese market, and the absence of the standard visual goodies the developers usually gave us was noticeably absent. Now, we are faced with Treasure Horse, a slot by the same developer that tackles the same idea in a much better way. While not all of our concerns were addressed, it is miles ahead of Triple Dragons, and it is immediately felt the moment you start the game.
This Pragmatic Play release has an ancient Chinese theme which offers players a 3×3 playing field with 18 fixed paylines. That means gamblers cannot choose to turn some or all paylines on and off in order to adjust their total bet. Pays are granted for collecting three identical symbols in adjacent positions on selected paylines, from left to right. The title offers only one special feature: A free spins bonus with a fourth multiplier reel enhancing each win.
How to play Treasure Horse
Rather than fully copying the physical machine design, the slot gives us a gorgeous background to admire. Players will find themselves in the wilderness of China, with thick forests ahead of them, tall mountains looming in the distance, and the wind slowly forcing the vegetation to bob back and forth. A minor nitpick which we were not huge fans of was the colour clash between the reels and the background – the red and gold really do not fit the calm and serene vibe the rest of the game is trying to pull off. It is not something that will bug gamblers for long, but it does feel like an odd oversight from the developers.
Symbols include three bar icons, with differing colours, a bowl full of growing bamboo trees, the lucky number 88, red pouches full of golden coins, and a pink coin with Chinese letters. The golden treasure horse is the Scatter symbol, while the Wild icon is simply the word Wild. Only Scatter has any interesting animations, while other symbols feel bland by comparison.
The title has medium to high volatility, and only one bonus to augment gameplay. The occasional addition of a multiplier reel helpfully boosts winning potential, which was already higher than usual thanks to the large number of paylines. When you consider most 3×3 slots offer one or five paylines, you realize just how good Treasure Horse’s offering really is.
