They say sequels never live up to the expectations of the movies they came from. For the most part, this is true. A lot of times, sequels are merely cash-grabs riding off the success of the original. It’s a vicious cycle we’ve seen many times before, but it’s always nice when a movie comes out to prove that rule wrong, and The Dark Knight certainly did. Following in the footsteps of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight took everything about the original and made it even better. It cemented the Joker as a character in the minds of many people, and made him an almost mandatory appearance in almost every Batman movie or video game since. But while the movie was great, we’re here to answer if its slot adaptation was equally as excellent.
The Dark Knight offers gamblers a 6×4 playing field with 50 fixed paylines, which pay both left to right and right to left. It offers four progressive jackpots, and a myriad of special features that are activated in a similar manner and play well with each other. Both Batman and Joker can appear stacked to fill the first or fifth reel, respectively. During this time, all Bat signal, Batman or Joker icons will lock to the reels and a coin is tossed. If it lands on the correct side, it will cause the reels to spin again, but if it lands on the opposite side, it awards the payout for that win. This can go on for a maximum of eight turns. On top of that, if you score the Bat symbol bonus on the second and third reel, or the Joker symbol bonus on the fourth and fifth, you trigger their respective free spins, while scoring both the Bat symbol bonus and Joker symbol bonus at the same time will launch an amalgamation of the other two special features, and it’s just as profitable as you might imagine.
How to Play The Dark Knight
While Playtech doesn’t really go overboard with the visual flair, there’s no denying they haven’t done a good job at making the slot look nice. The backdrop of the city in flames and smoke is a nice nod to the happenings in the movie, and you see several characters that played an important part in the film, such as Commissioner Gordon and Two Face, and, of course, the most important pair – Batman and the Joker. There are also several letters included in the mix, and we’re certain you know our stance on these by now. At the very least, they fit in with the solid background, but their presence is annoying compared to other stills from the movie itself.
On the gameplay side of things, The Dark Knight trends towards its special features, and it does have plenty to offer. It would have been relatively easy for the developers to simply add one feature, maybe two, and call it a day, but they’ve expanded the bonuses to really shine, so much so that this would be really fun to play even if the progressive jackpots weren’t a thing. We can’t help but give Playtech a golden star here, they’ve really done a great job.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s a grand total of four progressive jackpots, each one with a specific colour associated with its prize. Green is the Mini reward, Blue is the Minor reward, Yellow is the Major reward, and Red is the Grand reward. The more the progressive jackpot pays, the more tiles you need to collect, so while the Mini progressive jackpot only needs two green tiles, the Grand progressive jackpot requires five red tiles to be opened.
Bonus Games & Sign-ups
Bonus Bat symbols on reels two and three activate 7 free spins. Batman icons turn Wild and are locked on the reels for the duration of the bonus. During free spins, the bat symbol and Batman Wild both pay the same as Batman.
Bonus Joker symbols on reels four and five activate 7 free spins. Extra large Joker icons will appear on the reels.
If both bonus Bat and Joker symbols appear at the same time, a mix of both features is activated. Batman icons will become Wild and lock on the reels and extra large Joker symbols will also appear on the playing field. If the Joker lands on the locked Batman icon, the two merge into extra large Wild icon, however, it is no longer locked to the reels.
