Sidewinder Mobile Slot Review
If you’ve been following our reviews for a while, you know we like slots that try something different. It just comes with the territory of playing and reviewing so many titles – when games do something that we don’t see too often, we’re all too happy to indulge it. Sometimes, it works our great. Other times, it fuels our endless hatred to the person who thought making something like that was a good idea. Our approach into Sidewinder was optimistic and cautious. A unique playing field with lots of Wild opportunities to make some awesome wins was something we were certainly interested in. And Just for the Win and Microgaming made sure to keep it as entertaining as they could manage.
The reels are structured in a 3x5x5x5x3 layout, with the upper and lower parts of the reels being reserved for Wilds only. Even then, Wilds will not always appear. Their appearance is only mandated when Sidewinder Wild appears on the reels. Wild can point upwards or downwards, which will make Wild appear above or below the standard reel itself. The fun part of that is that Wild that appears on the upper reel will usually just be golden, which makes it stand in for any other symbol. It can also point to the opposite reel, allowing gamblers to activate both in one go and have two rows of Wilds at their disposal at the same time. On top of that, you also have free spins, which are activated when enough Scatters appear on the second and fourth reel. During free spins, both Wild rows are always active with the game played with 1,125 ways to win instead of standard 243.
How to Play Sidewinder
One of the things that developers can sometimes miss is that good graphics have to be followed up with awesome presentation. Sometimes, the latter is enough to carry the whole thing. None of the symbols in Sidewinder are particularly eye-catching. They’re honestly rather generic – you have stars, hearts, spades, clovers, diamonds, bars, four-leaf clovers, lucky horse shoes, golden bells and red sevens littering the reels. None of them are gorgeous by themselves and they don’t have any fancy animations. But their look fits nicely and the backdrop with scrolling arrows that highlights where Wild reels are and their position really brings it all together. It won’t be winning any awards, but it does look pretty cool.
The most important thing about these experiments is how they perform in a gameplay loop. We remember slots which boasted a hundred reels. It was a nightmare to keep up with those massive boards trying to watch for everything. In our opinion, this Microgaming release plays rather nicely when you trigger its Wilds. It’s essentially a regular 5×3 playing field with occasional extra Wilds appearing from the top, bottom or both if you’re really lucky. And while it’s not a gameplay success by itself, we really have to commend Just for the Win for dropping archaic coin design and telling you outright how much each win rewards, which goes a long way to making things simple for casual players.
Jackpots & Progressives
There are no progressive jackpots in Sidewinder, but with a 96.02% RTP and a maximum jackpot of 2,720x the wager, it’s almost as good as the real thing. Of course, getting to such a huge number is another thing all together, and the title’s medium volatility will have you spinning it over and over until you finally manage to activate those free spins. Don’t expect an easy win here.
