What happens when you take the term fruit machine a little too seriously? The answer seems to be the Playtech 2018 release, which adds the flavourful experience of Japanese martial arts and mixes them with various fruits and poker card icons. Right from the intro, your standards are set for what has to be their most ambitious visual undertaking yet. The developers seem to have really gone all out on the animations, and that shines through in the Fighting Free Games bonus, although it is all around present through the entirety of the title. There’s little we can say except to pick your favourite berry, and get ready for a fight to the death.
Satsumo’s Revenge is played on a 5×3 playing field and has 25 paylines. It offers two special features to gamblers. The first involves the grandmaster who sits off to the side of the reels. If a Wild symbol shows up in the fifth reel, the grandmaster has a chance to turn certain reels Wild, as well as add win multipliers, which can help gamblers score pretty high. The second bonus involves a small mini-game of rock, paper, scissors in which your berry fights another berry for the favour of the remaining fruits. You pick between rock, paper or scissors, and both you and your opponent have five hearts. The first one to remove the enemy’s five hearts wins, and depending on how things turn out, the game will either reward you with an extra spin and a sticky Wild if you win, only an extra free spins if it’s a draw, or if you lose, you simply lose a heart in that bonus game. We enjoyed it, but in our opinion, it tended to last a little bit too long, and was difficult to trigger. That said, it was most certainly worth it when it comes to value.
How to Play Satsumo’s Revenge
There’s something really visually appealing about this slot, and we think it has more to do with the animations than anything else. Opening any menu is really smooth, and opening the rules section will push the screen back slightly to put forward another one. In the fighting section, the animation really helps to bring two berries alive, not to mention the headmaster’s smooth beard rubbing while idling on the backdrop. The whole thing feels really well done, and we have to give credit to Playtech for making the effort to make their visuals stand out.
On the gameplay side of things, Satsumo’s Revenge is a somewhat standard medium variance title. The bonuses are usually the winning drivers, and considering the top symbol gives 40x your stake for a five-of-a-kind win, any larger scores will depend on free spins or the multipliers to the Wilds that the grandmaster can reward. Both of these are rather unique, adding a bit of flair to the standard 5-reel, 25-payline formula we’ve seen plenty of over the years. Our personal favourite would probably lie with the free spins, as it alternates between the rock, paper, scissors min-game and the free spins in the background. Really, the winning strategy would be to get a few wins early on, and then keep drawing to milk the free spins as much as possible, but sadly, the player isn’t the one who controls the pace.
Jackpots & Progressives
So while both of the bonuses could have a good potential, the numbers just aren’t there. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as high volatility, while bringing bigger wins, can also be a pain in the neck while you hit the bonuses and get those wins to materialise. On the other hand, medium variance titles like Satsumo’s Revenge strike a nice, middle ground. We had fun with it, even though the highest jackpot we ever got was 39x the wager.
