Popinata Mobile Slot Review
Life’s a fiesta, and it is worth celebrating! And that’s exactly what we’re doing – taking a trip to a proper party, complete with piñatas, silly hats, and delicious Mexican treats. Popinata is a 5 reel, 10 payline slot that tackles one of the greatest joys in life – cracking open a piñata and watching the treats pour out. Only this time around, rather than candy, it’s a whole lot of delicious cash prizes you could take home with you after you crack open the plush toy! Those of you who played a few games before can recognize this is RTG’s clone of Starburst – with Wild re-spins, ten paylines that pay both ways, and a visible lack of any other special features.
We quite like the simple graphics. It has an interesting, eye-catching style that looks good while not overwhelming lower end devices, which always awards a few points in our book. A quick glance tells you just about everything you need to know – Mexican themed piñatas, such as a sombrero, a taco, a guitar, a bottle, fireworks, a red pepper, a smiling cactus, and the donkey piñata acting as a Wild.
There is no Scatter, or any of the bonuses that usually come attached to them, which also means no free spins or small cash bumps from random icons outside of the paylines. This makes sense as a Starburst clone, but like with Starburst, we felt too limited in what we could do in the slot, which didn’t help enjoyment much.
Instead, all the care and attention was laid down on Wilds. Coming in the shape of a donkey piñata, they can appear on the second, third and fourth reel. They don’t award any cash themselves, but they spread across an entire reel and activate a re-spin. The expanded Wild stays in place for one more turn while the re-spin happens, and it can be retriggered if another expanded Wild appears.
How to Play Popinata
Unless you like spinning over and over for a potentially high reward, we doubt a game like Popinata would be for you. With a lack of special features on offer except for the re-spin, it feels boring at times. To credit, RTG did their copy rather faithfully, right down to the numbers. But if you were looking for something new with similar Starburst gameplay, it offers nothing, just a re-skin.
You can adjust the amount of active paylines and the wager itself, allowing you to play for $0.01 up to $2.50, though the maximum may vary depending which casino you play with. The variety benefits gamblers who don’t want to spend a lot of money more so than high rollers, although it may be a conscious choice given how much money the slot can eat up when it isn’t paying out.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot to work towards, but that piece of information isn’t that surprising. It has the potential to pay nicely – with a 96% RTP, you have a good chance to come out on top, and it certainly treated us nicer than some other Starburst clones that are present on the market.
But it is just a Starburst clone, and the only reason you wouldn’t go and play that is that it was patched and the old version can be very difficult to find. It offers 250x as the largest single jackpot win, which isn’t that great, and we can’t see how it would excite too many people in the crowd, especially given that it does ask a bit of an investment from you before it starts paying.
Bonus Games & Sign-ups
Popinata doesn’t add anything new to the mix when it comes to bonuses. It reflects a pure approach to what Starburst used to be, certainly, but just copying something without adding anything to it just leaves a sour taste in our mouths. Overall, we liked it, but we feel RTG could have done more with it.
