Lucky Koi Mobile Slot Review
It’s always nice to swing back to something old and good after a while, and Lucky Koi definitely falls into that category. Released by Microgaming a few years ago, the 5-reel 25-payline slot boasts a Japanese theme and bases itself around the Koi fish, a symbol of luck, perseverance and strength in their culture, making it a popular choice to tattoo onto oneself back in the day. Even now, it carries a somewhat spiritual meaning. As such, a pond full of Koi is certainly a place filled with luck for those who wish to embrace the lessons the fish has to teach them.
And we can see that this Microgaming release learned the lesson of persevering over gambling icons, instead using a full reel of unique artwork for your viewing pleasure over an animated background of a water-filled pond, through which an occasional Koi carp swims through. The graphics can’t really compare much to some graphical powerhouses of today, but we quite like it regardless, as it has a sense of calm and serenity about it.
Scatters are presented with the buildings that sit besides the pond, offering a nice cash bonus alongside the ability to active two different special features, one of which awards free spins with random multipliers that can go up to 5x, or a Koi bonus in which you are assigned between three to six fish that you can fish out of the pond and which, in turn, will grant you money. While the spins seem to be affected by how many Scatters were active on the playing field, the Koi bonus seems to randomly assign how many fish you can fish up.
The Wilds use the game’s logo, a golden Koi. They don’t really have much in triggering specials like Scatters. They act as a dumb symbol, that can only replace other icons except for Scatters, and even the amount of money that it can award, while high, is below Scatters. Wilds are somewhat of a disappointment in Lucky Koi.
How to Play Lucky Koi
Microgaming seemed fond of letting this slot rely on special feature wins to pay out any larger sums. The paytable otherwise can feel somewhat dull, and even the single wins are disappointing with the highest score, a five of a kind Scatter, only paying 100x the wager. We can’t say we’re big fans of this approach, but ultimately it does its intended purpose, which is to make bonuses all the more awesome when they do appear.
Lucky Koi does allow you to activate and deactivate paylines alongside adjusting the coin value and amount of coins on the reels. This means that you could play for a minimal $0.01 up to $125. However, the loss of so many paylines just isn’t worth it, especially since single wins don’t pay that much, so you will want all paylines active at a minimum – which, in turn, means you will have to play for $0.25 at the very least.
Jackpots & Progressives
The game doesn’t have a progressive jackpot and seems rather happy to flaunt the largest possible win in front of you while you’re browsing the paytable, which equals to $625,000. While that is a lot of money, it can solely be reached through special features, as multipliers or Koi fish cash in a lot more money than anything you could pick up during normal gameplay.
However, bonuses aren’t that frequent in Lucky Koi, which can throw off potential players. Given that the variance of the slot isn’t that high, we can’t see high rollers sinking too much into it for the adrenaline rush of a massive payout, while casual players might be dissuaded by the low baseline pays to spend too much time with it.
