Medieval history has always been popular, though for most people simply because it was tightly intertwined with fantasy settings. Strong knights, noble ladies, kingdoms to fight and defend – in fairy tales and great stories, it sounds glamorous and far away, even more so if you add fantasy to the mix. Large dragons, despicable sorcery, and usually a prophecy that involves some secret son of the King. Of course, real life isn’t quite so glamorous. The popularity of Game of Thrones shows us that people are well aware of this and wanted a peek behind the curtain that we usually see. And despite the flashy NetEnt visuals, there’s no hiding that this title tries its best at bringing the grim atmosphere of war.
The NetEnt 2018 release offers a unique reel set up. It has five reels, following a 4x3x4x3x4 format. The different heights are used to represent the walls of the fort, which is an interesting little thematic touch. The developers also used this new layout to set up different ways you activate several special features Fire Siege Fortress offers. Scatters can activate two different free spins bonuses – one activated by collecting three Scatters on the reels one, three and five, with double free spins being given out if Scatters appear at the top of the first, third and fifth reel. The second free spins feature simply requires two Scatters, but can reward either 3 free spins or a 5x wager win. On top of these, there are three different Wild Windows activated when Wild appears on the bottom of the second, third or fourth reel. The Archer Attack occurs when Wild appears on the bottom of the second reel, which places up to three random Wilds all over the playing field. Wild on the bottom of the third reel activates the Dragon’s Breath which creates expanding Wild on the third reel. Finally, the Wild symbol at the bottom of the fourth reel creates the Trebuchet Assault, which creates one or two giant Wilds on the reels.
How to Play Fire Siege Fortress
As you can see, NetEnt’s artists were hard at work to really make this title shine. They succeeded in some areas. We quite like the idea of the reel structure resembling the wall of a sieged fortress that you need to take. It offers something unique for gameplay and it redeems the developers for choosing such an awfully generic name. The animations and symbols also look quite good, though we’re not too pleased with the inclusion of poker card symbols such as 10, J, Q, K and A. The movement in the background image is also pretty cool. The one thing we’re not too pleased with is the knight sitting on the side of the reels. His animations don’t look as smooth as everything else, and you’ll get tired of him smacking his spear against the ground very quickly.
A unique reel layout also works out nicely for gameplay purposes as well. While a lot of the features are still the standard collecting three or more, you also have some positioning to work into things. Having Scatters give more free spins when at the very top of a reel is a really cool idea, as well as having Wilds appear on the bottom, making it look like you’re shooting projectiles up at the sky, like in an actual siege. Keep in mind, despite these innovations, this is a medium to high volatility title, which means wins can be far in between each other, but they’re usually pretty solid once they do appear.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot in Fire Siege Fortress, and we don’t quite feel like the title needs one. It has a lot of features, and we’re willing to say it’s too bloated as it stands right now. There’s no real difference between the two different free spins features and a coin win you can get is a rather lousy consolation prize, being just 5x your wager. The three Wild activated features were pretty cool, and alongside the free spins, can really make the difference.
