Usually, as December rolls to a close and the New Year is upon us, most developers will push out a slot or two and enjoy a well-deserved holiday after working hard at delivering a whole slew of games throughout the year for us all to enjoy and have fun with. So imagine our relative surprise that NetEnt decided to forgo the familiar treatment of seeing the jolly guy in a red suit to offer instead an obviously Irish-themed title with no pots of gold or green leaf clovers in sight. From the getgo, Finn and the Swirly Spin took our expectations and broke them, and that feeling never quite seemed to stop as we delved deeper into this NetEnt release.
It forgoes a traditional reel as it instead forms a square pathway that slowly pushes inwards, where a locked door awaits its key. You score by matching three or more of the same icon being adjacent to each other, and their position within the pathway doesn’t really block them from interacting from each other. Instead, the path is important for the Scatter – a single key symbol that appears on the bottom left, where the path starts each time, and which rewards a free spins bonus when it reaches the centre, as well as adding onto your collection of keys which you will use to unlock additional free spins special features. And hey, if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a bunch of bonuses that trigger randomly from time to time to keep you on your toes.

Honestly, this game is drop dead gorgeous. We don’t expect anything less from NetEnt, but we were just blown away by some of the stuff you can see here. The animations are really smooth even on mobile, and the transition scene between the playing field and the select screen for which free spins stage you want to choose is something that wouldn’t go amiss in a movie somewhere. You can obviously tell that the developers put a lot of care and effort into this, and we were thoroughly impressed.
But pretty graphics are more or less the basis for all of NetEnt’s games, which begs the question of how it is on the gameplay front. And honestly, it’s hard to really define where it is. We loved playing it, as the reel structure is something quite unique, and the sheer variety of everything that’s on offer really takes you by surprise. Once the shine wears off, you realize that the four bonuses that can occur randomly are essentially minor versions of the free spins special features you can unlock over time, and this is a really smart decision from NetEnt. While the first bonus is unlocked with just one key, to unlock the others, you need to collect additional keys. And in order to give you a sneak peek to make the grind more bearable, they put minor versions of those free spins bonuses into randomly triggered features.

For all the bells and whistles, though, there’s no progressive jackpot, but honestly, there’s so much here that it would just feel like clutter. There’s already a fair amount of stuff to help you bounce back after some losses, and the wins are usually enough to set you into a plus, though Finn and the Swirly Spin can be admittedly cutthroat at times when it comes to money, whether it’s gaining or losing it.
