It isn’t that surprising to open a slot and to find the developers cloned it from a previous release, but over the years we’ve come to expect certain standards from the big name developers, one of which is that the sequels mix things up in some way so it doesn’t feel like the same thing all over again. Unfortunately, this 5×3 reel 10 payline game from NetEnt is anything but – Hansel and Gretel play exactly the same, if not even worse in terms of payouts, and the original Red Riding Hood wasn’t that great on that front either.
The whimsical tune remains, as does the interesting effect of the world spinning along with the reels as the two children walk through the dark woods. Credit where it’s due, Fairytale Legends always looked beautiful, and that certainly doesn’t stop here, as it truly makes the world seem that much more alive when you’re playing it actively. The symbols fit the slot with candies and our two child heroes.
Scatters appear as locked, red chests, and have the ability to unlock three delicious special features, which exist on top of the existing ability of the fairy! They don’t reward any money themselves, but if they appear on the first, third and fifth reel, they can award the player either the Candy House bonus, in which the player picks candy pieces that turn into multipliers, and after that, they can choose either one of the three multipliers, or the average value of those three multipliers. The other two features are ten free spins or a coin win that takes your wager and multiplies it by x15.
Wilds are a brick road, but not a yellow one. Instead, this path is red with golden trimmings, and can appear stacked on the second and fourth reel. It also rewards a re-spin when it fully extends across a reel, which means it can also appear on the first and fifth reel.

Like a fair few of NetEnt games, Hansel and Gretel wants to rely on special features to carry home any larger wins. While this isn’t that uncommon with slots, this particular release seems rather shy about opening up to show its bonuses, despite having a fair few to show off. It feels like a drop in excitement, especially when you compare it to Red Riding Hood.
And with only ten paylines, it can be bothersome trying to manage some decent wins outside of activating one of the features. While they do make paylines go left to right and right to left, it doesn’t balance out, and we can’t help but feel that it was a calculated decision to lower the players winning potential.

There’s no progressive jackpot to work towards – what you see is what you get. And what you get isn’t that impressive, as the paytable honestly leaves a lot to be desired. The largest fixed jackpot is a x400 increase, which we can’t say we’re fans of, and the value of icons drops off very quickly. Despite being sorted in a separate category, medium win symbols barely pay more than the low win icons, so much so that you might wonder why they separated them at all if not for the graphics.
In the end, it just confirms what you probably suspected the moment you started up Hansel and Gretel and saw all those bonuses one after another being showed off to you. Normal gameplay was going to be lacklustre to get you to spin long enough to activate the special features, and even that might take a while.
