Emperor of the Sea Mobile Slot Review
We’ve recently been burned out on Asian-themed slots, as it seems in the last couple of years the entire gambling industry raced each other on who could put out more games with that theme and what mystical figures they could place on the cover to attract players. Always with similar playing symbols, the number 8, samey soundtracks, they honestly tended to blend together after a while. Emperor of the Sea suffers from the same problems, being relatively fun while hitting all the checkboxes to be a stereotypical Chinese slot.
It is a shame, because the approach Microgaming took is relatively interesting and we quite like it. The reels might look somewhat outdated to most players, but the paper-like grid, alongside the obviously painted background, is meant to represent Chinese paper theatre. We like this a lot, but it is ruined by presence of gambling icons which clash so obviously with traditional Oriental symbols that help set things in the mood.
Wilds don’t do much to help either, as they just use the game’s logo, which further draws away from immersing the player. That said, at least you’ll be happy to see Wilds, as they come stacked during normal gameplay, and stack even more during the free spins bonus. As in every other slot, Wilds can replace all icons except for Scatters.
Scatters do a better job, using a golden hat which should be immediately familiar. Scatters bring a nice cash bonus along with them, and three or more trigger the extra rounds special feature, in which you receive 8 free spins. On top of that, the playing field adopts rolling reels, which allows you to chain wins together, and growing Wilds, which increases the amount of Wilds, and by extent, how much you can hope to win in this game.
How to Play Emperor of the Sea
So, all combined, Microgaming had a great idea to put a unique twist on an overdone theme, but then ruined it with gambling symbols and the slot logo. So instead, what’s left is an old looking game in a sea of slots in which developers designed impressive visuals and animations to get attention of gamblers. It does not bode well for Emperor of the Sea. In fact, it feels like the seafaring dragon might end up sinking and being forgotten before his time.
As for gameplay itself, the betting range on this game is decent, but again, nothing amazing. You can change your bet lines, coin size and amount of coins to play for $0.38 up to $44, but having less paylines never pays off, so your true minimum sits at $0.88. This is great if you don’t have a lot of money and want to play casually, but $44 likely won’t keep serious gamblers satisfied as a maximum bet.
Jackpots & Progressives
Emperor of the Sea doesn’t have any progressive jackpots, and the highest one you can reach is 1,875x your maximum wager, at $82,500. Now, this isn’t bad, and you could win a lot, but it depends on what sort of player you are. This Microgaming release, even with stacked Wilds, can have moments where you will have spin after spin where you win nothing at all.
Instead, the slot relies on you getting free spins so you can start unlocking the true potential of what can be found in the game. Considering the developer, this isn’t unexpected, as Microgaming likes to focus on those bonus round special features, but if you aren’t the biggest fan of that kind of gameplay, it can be annoying.
Bonus Games & Sign-ups
There is only one special feature in this slot, and that’s the free spins bonus. Three or more Scatters will reward you 8 free spins, which also activates Rolling Reels and Growing Wilds. Rolling Reels are a relatively popular option in which winning combinations will disappear, and new icons will fall in their place, opening up the potential to increase how much you have won in a single spin.
Growing Wilds, on the other hand, will increase your Wild stack, one by one to a potential maximum increase of fifteen Wilds at once. These two bonuses brought together will intrigue a lot of players, and it was a saving grace to an otherwise bland game.
